If you’re a fan of The Glenlivet 12 yo, prepare yourself to part with the expression. The Glenlivet has released The Glenlivet Founder’s Reserve, a new no age statement single malt replacing the classic 12 yo.
The Glenlivet Founder’s Reserve was crafted by Master Distiller, Alan Winchester as a tribute to the style of whisky originally created by George Smith, the distillery’s founder. The single malt is aged in predominantly first-fill American oak ex-bourbon casks.
Like many distilleries trying to meet global demands, this latest expression is targeted at a newcomer to the category of single malt. The whisky is light on the palate, easy to sip and one that can be called a “breakfast whisky” by experienced drammers.

Comments: The Glenlivet Founder’s Reserve is a fresh, sweet and light entry level dram. For someone starting on their whisky journey, it is a good choice and comes in at a reasonable price. Whisky enthusiasts will not doubt compare it to the Glenlivet 12 yo and lament its loss, but one needs to keep in mind that this new expression has been crafted for a different type of consumer. We think The Glenlivet Founder’s Reserve would make a good choice in fruity cocktails that help to enhance the whisky’s fruit character.
