March 3 is National Moscow Mule Day and your chance to raise a copper mug to a Sugar Free Moscow Mule.
The classic Moscow Mule consists of three simple ingredients, vodka, ginger beer and lime and consequently, the date chosen for National Moscow Mule Day, March 3 or 3-3 is of significance.
The drink is a relatively recent invention dating back to 1941 and attributed to three individuals who came together to create the timeless drink: John G. Martin who had recently purchased Smirnoff distillery and had trouble selling his vodka; Jack Morgan, owner of the Cock ‘n’ Bull pub on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood who had trouble selling his own brand of ginger beer; and a woman named Ozeline Schmidt who provided the copper mugs (though another version attributes it to Russian immigrant named Sophie Berezinski, whose father owned a copper factory in Russia and found herself in the USA trying to sell the copper mugs she had designed).
Regardless of the history of the Moscow Mule, the drink has retained its popularity and several variations on the original have ensured its continuity.
Our riff is a Sugar Free Moscow Mule, a light and refreshing option for when you want to cut down on sugar in your diet. The drink has no sugar, artificial sweeteners, or sugar substitutes such as honey or agave, and no ginger beer. Instead, we’re using a barspoon of freshly grated ginger and soda water for a low-carb drink that has virtually no sugar.
