Squid Ink Cocktails: Black Moon Rising

The third and last drink in our Squid Ink Cocktails series for Halloween is Black Moon Rising.

Black Moon Rising Cocktail

Smoke, heat and salinity are the key flavours in the Black Moon Rising cocktail. Squid ink and tequila play well together in this cocktail inspired by the Margarita. Add a touch of Mezcal for earthiness and smoke and garnish with a lime wheel dusted with black lava salt resting on the ice to give the effect of Black Moon Rising.

Black Moon Rising Cocktail

  • 45 ml tequila blanco
  • 15 ml mezcal
  • 15 ml fresh lime juice
  • 15 ml simple syrup
  • ½ bar spoon squid ink
  • smoked chilli salt (for rimming)
  • black lava salt
  • lime wheel

Glassware: tumbler or old fashioned glass
Garnish: lime wheel sprinkled with black lava salt

Rim the glass by running a cut lime through the rim then dip in smoked chilli salt. Add a generous amount of ice cubes to the glass. In a cocktail shaker, add tequila, mezcal, lime juice, simple syrup and squid ink over ice and shake until cold. Double strain into the rimmed glass with ice. To garnish, sprinkle black lava salt over the lime wheel and rest it at an angle over ice.
