When it comes to St Patrick’s Day cocktails, green drinks with ingredients such as Midori, Green Chartreuse and Creme de Menthe can have a certain appeal.
The Rory O’More Cocktail is a tribute to St Paddy’s Day and has no green colour. The drink is named after Rory O’More (also Rory O’Moore), a descendant of an Irish noble family and landowner renowned for being one of the four main organisers of the Irish Rebellion of 1641.
The cocktail is featured in Mr. Boston Official Bartender’s Guide cocktail book and app which describes it as an Irish version of the Rob Roy with orange bitters. The drink is also a variant of the Manhattan substitued with Irish Whiskey, sweet vermouth and orange bitters.
The Rory O’More Cocktail is also been referred to as the Emerald, not to be confused with the Emerald Isle cocktail (gin, crème de menthe, bitters) which is a green drink. Another name variant is the Paddy Cocktail, which uses a 1:1 ratio of Irish whiskey to sweet vermouth with Angostura bitters instead of orange bitters. Confused? It’s all Irish to me…
If you’re looking for a non-green themed cocktail with which to toast Ireland’s patron saint on March 17, look no further than the Rory O’More. It’s easy to make at home using three accessible ingredients.
